In search of a continuum of care
Barbara is a cancer survivor and a widow. She was looking specifically for a retirement community with the reassurance of additional care should the need arise. Originally from Aptos, Barbara wanted to stay in the Monterey Bay region for her love of the ocean, coastal mountains, and people.
She looked at many communities before choosing Forest Hill, finding it was the only one offering all she was looking for. “Not only do we have all levels of care here, but a warm and inviting community, and we can walk to downtown or the ocean,” Barbara says. One more thing made her decision easy: Barbara loved the historical elegance of the Main Building, a former luxury hotel. “I should have been an architect,” jokes Barbara, a retired research biologist.
A family feeling
Barbara’s desire for different levels of care under one roof has already proved beneficial. She was able to take advantage of Forest Hill’s five-star rated skilled nursing center while recuperating from knee surgery and deeply appreciated the convenience of rehabilitating at home, close to friends. As she regained her strength, Barbara’s occupational therapist would take her to her apartment for practice sessions, preparing her for a seamless return home.
“That was a wonderful thing. I can’t think of any other place where they could have done that,” Barbara says. “It was beautiful care.”
